Terms of service

Last updated 1 November 2026.

SwitchBoardOne is a trading name of J Brown Online Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17394642). Registered office: Suite 1.01, Challenge House, Sherwood Drive, Bletchley, Milton Keynes, MK3 6DP. In these terms, “we” means J Brown Online Ltd and “you” means the business that signs up.

1. The service

SwitchBoardOne gives you a UK landline number that passes incoming calls to one or more phones you choose, with opening hours, voicemail and a greeting. You can also make calls that show your number, using a phone app, desk phone or computer signed in with the login in your account. Outgoing calls can be made to UK landlines and mobiles only; premium-rate and international numbers cannot be called.

2. Emergency calls (999 and 112)

You can call 999 and 112 from a phone app, desk phone or computer signed in to SwitchBoardOne. Calls passed to your mobile are not affected; your mobile network handles emergency calls made from it as normal. Please read the following carefully:

  • Emergency calls send the emergency address you gave us. If you are somewhere else, the emergency services may not know where you are, so tell the operator your location. Keep the address up to date in your account.
  • Calls from an app, desk phone or computer need power and a working internet connection. They will not work in a power cut, if your internet is down, or if your device is not signed in. Always keep a mobile phone or other line available.
  • Make sure everyone who uses your devices knows this, including staff and visitors.

3. Your account and verification

You must be at least 18 and using the service for a business. UK rules require every number to be registered to a real business and address, so we ask for your details and supporting documents and pass them to our network partner to check. A number cannot be switched on until those checks pass. Please keep your details up to date.

4. Ordering, payment and Direct Debit

You pay the first month when you order, by bank payment through GoCardless. The same step sets up a Direct Debit, and after that we collect your monthly plan price in advance, starting one month after your number goes live. We set your number up only after your first payment has arrived and we have checked the order. If we cannot approve an order, we refund the first payment in full.

Each plan includes a number of minutes a month, counting incoming calls passed to your phones and outgoing calls made from your app or desk phone. If you regularly go over, we will contact you first; extra minutes are 3p each and are added to a later Direct Debit, which we tell you about in advance. Prices are shown in pounds and we will give you at least 30 days’ notice of any change.

On Pay as you go, the monthly price covers the number only and every minute is charged at 3p, counted the same way. Early each month we email you last month’s total and collect it by a separate Direct Debit. Totals under £1 are carried into the next month.

5. Cancelling

There is no minimum term. You can cancel at any time from your account or by emailing us. Your number keeps working until the end of the month you have paid for; we then stop the Direct Debit and release the number. We do not refund part months. If you would like to take your number to another provider, ask us before you cancel and we will help where the network allows it.

6. Fair and lawful use

You must not use the service for nuisance, marketing or unlawful calls, to mislead people about who you are, or in a way that breaks Ofcom rules. Keep your app and desk phone login private; you are responsible for calls made with it, and should change the password in your account straight away if you think someone else has it. We may pause a number straight away if we reasonably believe it is being misused, if a payment fails and is not put right, or if our network partner requires it. We will tell you why.

7. Numbers

Phone numbers are allocated by Ofcom to networks, not owned by customers. You have the right to use your number while your account is active and paid. We may need to change a number in rare cases where the network or regulator requires it, and will give you as much notice as we can.

8. Availability and liability

We work hard to keep the service running, but calls depend on telephone networks, mobile signal and internet services that we do not control, so we cannot promise it will never be interrupted. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or anything else that cannot be limited by law. Otherwise, our total liability in any 12 months is limited to the fees you paid us in that period, and we are not liable for lost profits, lost business or missed calls.

9. Your data

We keep call records (numbers, time, length and outcome) and voicemail recordings for 180 days so you can see them in your account, then delete them. See our privacy notice.

10. Complaints and law

If something is not right, email info@jbrownonline.com or call 01707 818450and we will aim to resolve it within 10 working days. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
